The Red Skirt Figure Painting doesn’t quite say it all. It features our new Burmese kitten nestling in a corner of a lap. I caught him napping in the sunshine and came up with this image. I let the colours thereafter select themselves. To my usual blocks I have added linear elements – the flower pattern on the fabric. I kept that white, as in reality, worrying that it would conflict with the lies of the drawing. The red necklace rhymes with the skirt and one arm is pink as if picking up a reflection from the skirt. Elsewhere I have used a green tone in the face and hair to pick up the greenish ochre of the chair fabric.

The red of the skirt suggested to two areas of dark red around the top of the figure. Likewise, the greenish yellow of the chair suggested the ochre in the walls and in the shadow area of the chair. The white original of the blouse would have dominated the colour palette so I let the greenish yellow of the chair suggest using Naples Yellow plus white, which in turn prompted the lilac shadows. I used the same greenish yellow to integrate the face and chair into the rest of the figure. Only the cat is more or less accurately rendered. He would not have it otherwise.
