Belgians

sinclairwebster

We caught a wave of good weather among the dunes of the Belgian coast at De Haan aan Zee.  The beach runs for 12 km. but in the centre  the dunes give way to a sea wall and promenade with numerous cafes and we stopped at one for a beer. At the next table sat a couple having coffee and waffles – well it is Belgium, what else would you have with a coffee mid-afternoon? My eye was caught by her hat and the colours of her dress and cardigan.

I made a careful mental note and here they are, as recovered by me a few days after we returned. Sort of. The shadow under her hat was prompted by the colour of her dress and I gave her heavy blue eye shadow to focus attention on her eyes. I played his down by giving him sun glasses. In reality he was not wearing any. Similarly, I gave him a blue shirt to echo the sea and contrast with the umbrella they were sitting under. That I made yellow to balance the sea colour.

The brewery logo is red but seen against the light it looked pink, so I kept that. The whole painting is full of ice cream colours which I think reflect the relaxed atmosphere of the café. (They were selling a lot of it!) and the enjoyment I got out of  a bit of people watching.
